Well, it looks like our previous hack on how to start Chrome in Incognito Mode fails in Vista, but here’s an alternative Javascipt version you can save as XXX.js and make it work using Javascript:

Google Chrome without Spyware = Iron

Here’s a German version of Google Chrome without all the features that send people’s surfing info back to Google. I can see that some of Chrome’s embedded featured that send back personal data back to Google can slow down your browsing slightly, although not that much.

For those of you who want complete privacy, you can try this Iron browser.

The “Iron” browser is based on the “Google Chromium” source code, but “Iron” does not send any user specific data to Google anymore and it does not contain a unique user ID. Iron is a product of “SRWare ” – a german software company. In Iron the following Google Chrome features have been deactivated:

no alternative error messages, when having entered a wrong URL

no sending of collected data to Google, if Iron has crashed

no unwanted Google updater

Chrome Hack – How to change Bookmarklet Favicon Icons!

Here’s a cool Chrome Hack, it’s how to change your Bookmarklet Favicon Icons using a Windows SQL database browser and switching around some values. It’s very interesting to note that the Chrome browser uses a local database within the program, thus making it more stable and scalable. (I am not sure if the same thing is done with Firefox but I believe there’s a bunch of libraries that you need to know.)

This is a rather complex hack involving numbers so I will just wait until the Chrome adds automatic favicon recognition feature like Firefox.

I added quite a few bookmarklets to my Bookmarks bar and was unhappy with the same default icon that showed for each one. There are no settings currently available within Chrome to change the icon, but there is a way to fix them that works quite well.

Although not the official version of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux, the CrossOver Chromium is pretty much the Mac and Linux version of Google Chrome since it’s built on Chromium.

Changing User Agent String with any browser is a useful hack that can be used to get free WiFi at Starbucks hotspots .

Here’s a real ghetto hack that involves changing the hex values of chrome.dll using a free hex editor.

Simply open the file and look for something like this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.X.Y.Z Safari/525.13.

Then change to something like this or any other user agent string:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543 Safari/419.3

The result is shown below where the browser will act like an iPhone Browser.

This might actually be useful for testing applications for the iPhone browser. Of course, you can do it in Firefox too but Google Chrome browser is probably closer to the iPhone’s Safari browser since it’s based on the WebKit.

A rewrite from scratch has been done, because I’ve lost (or almost) my previous source code, now I’m working on another computer. Since my notebook has its LCD display’s backlight damaged I couldn’t reach the previous source code. However this new one is written for Lazarus compiler.

First and foremost -> Requirements:

- Authorship details inside the same theme file, now.
- Preview themes: This tool will show some images from the Theme file itself by dragging theme files and dropping over it in order to preview it and if you want you can replace default.dll in Chrome’s path and after that Launch it by clicking Apply button.

How to Run Java and Java Applets in Chrome!

A lot of game sites such as Yahoo Games and others may use Java and Java applets to run their games/applications.

Although the Google Chrome comes with a super-fast Javascript engine, Javascript is an entirely different platform than Java . Therefore, you need to install a beta version of Java Runtime Engine (JRE).

FYI, this is also great new for Java developers like myself, knowing that there IS support for Java on the Chrome.

Here’s a great way to make a Email Link bookmark in Gmail in Google Chrome so it takes you straight to “Compose Mail”.

Someone has posted a bookmarklet to email links with your default mail program, but for those who use Gmail as webmail, this will work.

Make a new bookmark and make the name Email with Gmail or whatever you want, and the URL

That currently opens a new tab. I’m working on getting the pop-out effect that Gmail has.
Unfortunately, middle-clicking the first one does not work, because when it opens it in a new tab, it is reading the URL and title from that new tab instead of the original one you wanted to to link to. I may work on a solution to this in the future.

Oddly this makes the text box in Gmail not the width of the screen. I’m not sure why that is, but it works just fine- just looks a little funny. If anyone can offer any wisdom to this, I would appreciate it.

Here’s a quick hack although many of you probably know this:

1. Visit Hotmail.com

2. Login

3. The resulting page says that Hotmail cannot identify your browser (Typical MS style, if you think it’s better than your own, pretend it doesn’t exist! Try ignoring Firefox now!). Near the bottom of this page is a link which says “continue anyway” or something on that mood. Click on that and you are good to go. And use the new 0.4beta of Chrome for better performance.

Well, here’s another cool hack that all you YouTubers might enjoy as you can download the actual YouTube videos with a little effort. This hack probably works for Firefox and other browsers too because it’s a simple Javascript bookmarklet.

Here’s how to do it, copy the following code and make a bookmarklet, you should see “Download FLV” as shown below:

Of course, there’s plethora of proxy sites and programs you can use but here’s a good one for blocking ads in case you don’t have them.

A solution to this for now is http://www.privoxy.org/

1.) Install Privoxy
2) Click on the Wrench icon in Chrome in the upper right corner
3.) Choose options>Under The Hood>Change proxy settings
4.) A windows box pops up, choose LAN settings (at least this is what it’s called in Vista)
5.) Check off “Proxy settings” and in the address setting add127.0.0.1 and in the port 8118
6.) If you have the option, you can also check off “Bypass proxy for local settings”
7.) Click “Ok”, close chrome and restart it.

Tada. Enjoy.

For those of you who are web site designers/programmers, you need to realize first-hand that the Google Chrome is based on WebKit and therefore, it’s very similar to Safari, which is also built on the WebKit.

To get started, here’s a CSS hack I found for the Google Chrome that might help you get started.

Non-compliant selectors can be used and a valid way to target individual browsers. Chrome supports every selector, just like Safari 3.1. My recommendation is to use the body:first-of-type hack, the CSS hack/filter for Safari as a filter for Safari 3+ and Chrome. There should be no reason to target Chrome with the exclusion of Safari 3.1, but if you want to target both, filtering out Safari 3.0, I would try using:

After pondering about where the Google Chrome download is and finding a version of it, I have finally found the Chrome Developer page, where you can get started with Chrome application development. (Thanks to post by Peteris!)

Here’s also a cool breakdown of relative path and what they do by Peteris:

Here’s a couple keyboard shortcuts for helping you to work faster on the Chrome browser:
(I personally find that these shortcuts are great for Chrome developers)

JavaScript debugger: Alt+`, or select “Page (icon)|Developer|Debug JavaScript”
JavaScript console: “Page (icon)|Developer|JavaScript console”, or use the Show Console icon at the bottom left of the Element inspector
Element inspector: Right-click on the page, and select “Inspect Element”. You’ll have to navigate the tree control in the left-hand pane, but you should eventually be able to find the part of the page you’re seeking by watching what gets colored on the page as you hover in the DOM tree.
Memory tracker: Shift-Esc or “Page (icon)|Developer|Task manager” gets you the dynamic memory, CPU, and Network usage of all currently running Chrome components. Clicking on Stats for Nerds at the bottom left of the Task Manager or browsing to about:memory gets you a snapshot of the memory details of all running Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera, and Safari instances.
Create a shortcut: Ctrl-D (like Firefox) or click on the star icon to the left of the address bar
Rearrange tabs: just drag them where you want them to go
Add a Home button: “Wrench (icon)|Options|Basics|Home page|Show Home button on the toolbar”

Google has stated that they will be coming out with Mac and Linux versions of Google Chrome later down the road so while you wait, you can still run Google Chrome on your Linux or Ubuntu using Wine.

Wine is a free program for Linux systems to run Windows apps. Although it doesn’t run 100% of applications (as it depends on drivers needed for the program), apparently it does work for running Chrome in Linux.

Chrome Hack - How to make a Chrome USB Drive!

If you are like me, you will want to run your Chrome Browser anywhere by having the app in your USB and run from it.

Here’s how to make a Chrome USB Drive:

1. Download Portable Chrome and extract (un-zip) it.

2. Copy the files into your USB Flash Drive.

3. Run ChromeLoader.exe from your USB anytime you need to use it.

(Your Profile preferences are stored in directory called Profil in your USB)

4. Enjoy Google Chrome Browser anywhere by sticking your USB into any computer.

This is Portable Chrome. Just download & extract and start with ChromeLoader.exe. Chromeloader.exe is a simple AutoIt-Script – compiled to an exe-File. So – if you got an error from your AV: it’s just a false poitive, because ChromeLoader.exe was packed with UPX. All settings are stored in “Profil”-folder. Have fun!

Why did Google name their Browser "Chrome"?

Usage of word,

If you are wondering why Google named their browser, “Chrome”, here’s my opinion.

First Hint

At the first sight of Google “Chrome”, I thought it was basically a modified version of Firefox, based on the same open-source Gecko engine used by Firefox.

Another Hint

Another hint was that the default GUI theme is called, “Chrome” for Firefox. (As a Firefox extension developer who have developed the SiteHoppin Toolbar for Firefox, I can contest that Chrome has always been a widely used term for Firefox programmers.)

Proof

If you don’t believe me, take a look at this directory (H:\Documents and Settings\max\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xdorv70b.default) in your Windows system file where you should rename “max” to your Windows user name and xdorv70b.default would be something-similar.default.

If you open up extensions directory from there and open up any of the directories inside it, (each folder is a Firefox extension) you will probably notice that almost every Firefox extension uses a file called, chrome.manifest. (Yes, even file names with “Chrome” in Firefox)

To sum it up, I am not saying Google Chrome was taken from Firefox but only that “Chrome” has always been widely known among the Firefox Development crowd.

Coincidence or not, you be the judge.

For starters, goto your Chrome Browser and type, “about:internets“. Now, that’s a cool 3D Pipe app. I don’t know why it’s there but it’s always cool to find new things about the Google Chrome Browser.

Enable Chrome's Features in Firefox!

Although it is kinda pointless to enable Chrome’s features in Firefox, (since the greatest part about Chrome is that it comes with the features as default) there’s a way to make almost every feature of the Google Chrome browser available in your good ol’ Firefox.

Of course, adding all these plugins will slow down your Firefox greatly. Better yet, simply use 2 different browsers for now until the Chrome gets better and better.

The only thing I miss about Firefox IS all the plugins though. (I couldn’t live without them)

I will have to wait too until they can make Firefox plugins compatible with Chrome. (which I doubt would happen)

Google Chrome About:Stats Hack!

For the most recent stats on the Google Chrome, you can type about:stats on your browser window. You will get a nice stats page like above.

You can even figure out how long it took Chrome to process itself by filtering the stats page with keyword, “Chrome”.

Here’s a cool example of using the stats page to display how long it took to load Chrome browser.(exactly that is)

Google Chrome Launched with Multi-Threading Technology!

Google Chrome has just been launched (and of course our new Chrome Hacks blog along with it) with multi-threading technology that makes use of multiple processes (in Windows system) instead of traditional 1-process approach. (which is taken by IE and Firefox)

It’s still unclear how beneficial Google Chrome’s multi-threading technology is but in my experience, it does help.

Here’s an excerpt from Google Chrome Page:
