Quick Tip - How to Open Hotmail in Chrome!

Here’s a quick hack although many of you probably know this:

1. Visit Hotmail.com

2. Login

3. The resulting page says that Hotmail cannot identify your browser (Typical MS style, if you think it’s better than your own, pretend it doesn’t exist! Try ignoring Firefox now!). Near the bottom of this page is a link which says “continue anyway” or something on that mood. Click on that and you are good to go. And use the new 0.4beta of Chrome for better performance.

Here’s some interesting stats on the Google Chrome. It seems like it’s getting stable around 0.70%, not bad considering Opera is at about the same.

Will Google Chrome fade away?
In short, I don’t think so, but it’s definitely going to take another year or two before Chrome takes a bigger share of the market. With AdWords and Google’s super-big audience, I think Chrome will slowly convert IE users.

Chrome’s slow slide may be because of Google’s low-key promotion, Vizzaccaro said. “The only marketing effort I’ve seen from Google is in sponsored links on search results for ‘browser’ or ‘browsers’ search terms,” he said. “On Google, Chrome is naturally the top sponsored link. On Yahoo, it was second. And on Windows Live, I couldn’t even find it in the first five pages of organic results.”

Here’s a security alert for Google Chrome, it seems like some kind of memory leak problem with the Enter key:

*Description:*
The Google chrome browser is vulnerable to memory exhaustion based
denial of
service which can be triggered remotely.The vulnerability triggers when
Carriage
Return(\r\n\r\n) is passed as an argument to window.open() function. It
makes the
Google Chrome to generate number of windows at the same time thereby
leading
to memory exhaustion. The behavior can be easily checked by looking at
the task
manager as with no time the memory usage rises high. The problem lies in
the handling
of object and its value returned by the javascript function. Once it is
triggered the pop
ups are started generating. The Google Chrome browser generate object
windows continuously
there by affecting memory of the resultant system. Probably it can be
crashed within no time.
User interaction is required in this.

Google Chrome without Spyware = Iron

Here’s a German version of Google Chrome without all the features that send people’s surfing info back to Google. I can see that some of Chrome’s embedded featured that send back personal data back to Google can slow down your browsing slightly, although not that much.

For those of you who want complete privacy, you can try this Iron browser.

The “Iron” browser is based on the “Google Chromium” source code, but “Iron” does not send any user specific data to Google anymore and it does not contain a unique user ID. Iron is a product of “SRWare” - a german software company. In Iron the following Google Chrome features have been deactivated:

no alternative error messages, when having entered a wrong URL

no sending of collected data to Google, if Iron has crashed

no unwanted Google updater

Google Chrome without Spyware = Iron

Behind Google’s Chrome Intentions and Outcome…

We all want to know what Google is thinking and what their goal is with this Chrome browser. Personally, I thought Google did a great thing by making it open source. For god sakes, you can now basically create your own browser based on the Chromium and maybe even add your family album as Google gadgets plugin. (or whatever)

The same thing can be said of Firefox, of which some companies have took advantage and even made a Web Browser-based SQL database browser called Kirix Strata. (It’s built on the Gecko, the open source engine behind Firefox. You can find details here.)

By open-sourcing it, Google’s already ahead of the competitions like Microsoft while Mozilla is also open source and has been proving itself in the open-source world for years.

I think in 2-3 years, Google can easily blow the market away from everybody not because Chrome browser is awesome right now, but because it will be 5-10 times more awesome by then. Knowing the number of people who work on the Google search engine as a mass collaboration of engineers to build a highly scalable search engine system, I think this Browser market is already in their hands as they have proved once before with GoogleMaps overtaking YahooMaps with its itsy bitsy pixel mapping technology. (although Yahoo now has the same technology, their maps are almost identical to Google except StreetView and some other features, which make GoogleMaps better.

We will keep a keen eye on how this all turns out, stay tuuuuned by subscribing to the blog!

Chrome Hack - How to change Bookmarklet Favicon Icons!

Here’s a cool Chrome Hack, it’s how to change your Bookmarklet Favicon Icons using a Windows SQL database browser and switching around some values. It’s very interesting to note that the Chrome browser uses a local database within the program, thus making it more stable and scalable. (I am not sure if the same thing is done with Firefox but I believe there’s a bunch of libraries that you need to know.)

This is a rather complex hack involving numbers so I will just wait until the Chrome adds automatic favicon recognition feature like Firefox.

But if you really want it NOW, you can click the via link below and knock yourself out.

I added quite a few bookmarklets to my Bookmarks bar and was unhappy with the same default icon that showed for each one. There are no settings currently available within Chrome to change the icon, but there is a way to fix them that works quite well.

Google Chrome Short Hack - How to Backup History, Bookmarks with Google Chrome Backup!

Chrome Tips - Chrome Channel Switcher allows you to switch between Chrome beta and dev versions!

You can now download the Chrome Channel Switcher, which allows you to switch between the “beta” Chrome and “Dev” Chrome. The Beta Chrome are the stable releases whereas the Dev Chrome is updated as soon as a bug or security flaw is fixed.

This will help you to try out the latest fixes and features using the “Dev” mode.

Here’s how to do it from the Chromium Dev site:

Subscribing to the Dev channel

Download and run the Google Chrome Channel Chooser (http://chromium.googlecode.com/files/chromechannel-1.0.exe).

Click the circle next to Dev.

Click Update to save your choice.

Click Close.

In Google Chrome, click the wrench menu and choose About Google Chrome.
Note: On Windows Vista, updates from the About box require Service Pack 1. With 0.2.149.29 (the current release), on demand updates do not work in Vista SP1 if User Account Control is disabled.

Click Update Now to install the current Dev channel release.

Restart Google Chrome.

Although not the official version of Google Chrome for Mac and Linux, the CrossOver Chromium is pretty much the Mac and Linux version of Google Chrome since it’s built on Chromium.

Chromium is an open-source browser project that aims to build a safer, faster, and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. The Chromium codebase is the basis for Google’s Chrome browser.

Until Google officially releases their Linux/Mac versions, you can resort to downloading the CrossOver Chromium on your Mac and Linux.

Chrome About Hack - How to retrieve DNS Prefetching Times!

Remember we told you about how DNS prefetching on Google Chrome is part of the reason that Chrome can load websites faster?

Well, here’s how to retrieve Chrome’s prefetching times using the About hack.

1) Type “about:dns” into the address bar to see how much time you’ve saved using the DNS Prefetching.

2) Type “about:histograms/DNS.PrefetchFoundName” to see the details behind the DNS Prefetching.

Pretty cool huh? (Pretty useless for normal users though…)

If you’ve been running Google Chrome for a while, be sure to try typing “about:dns” into the address bar to see what savings you’ve accrued! Humorously, this prefetching feature often goes unnoticed, as users simply avoid the pain of waiting, and tend to think the network is just fast and smooth. To look at it another way, DNS prefetching removes the variance from surfing latency that is induced by DNS resolutions. (Note: If about:dns doesn’t show any savings, then you probably are using a proxy, which is resolving DNS on the behalf of your browser.)

There are several other benefits that Google Chrome derives from DNS prefetching. During startup, it pre-resolves domain names, such as the home pages, very early in the startup process. This tends to save about 200-500 ms during application startups. Google Chrome also pre-resolves the host names in URLs suggested by the omnibox while the user is typing, but before they press enter. This feature works independently of the broader omnibox logic, and doesn’t utilize any connection to Google. As a result, Google Chrome will generally navigate to a typed URL faster, or reach a user’s search provider faster. Depending on the popularity of the target domain, this can save 100-250ms on average, and much more in the worst case.

If you are running Google Chrome, try typing “about:histograms/DNS.PrefetchFoundName” into the address bar to see details of the resolution times currently being encountered on your machine.

The bottom line to all this DNS prefetching is that Google Chrome works overtime, anticipating a user’s needs, and making sure they have a very smooth surfing experience. Google Chrome doesn’t just render and run Java Script at a remarkable speed, it gets users to their destinations quickly, and generally sidesteps the pitfalls surrounding DNS resolution time.

Chrome Hack - How to change User Agent String in Chrome!

Changing User Agent String with any browser is a useful hack that can be used to get free WiFi at Starbucks hotspots.

Here’s a real ghetto hack that involves changing the hex values of chrome.dll using a free hex editor.

Simply open the file and look for something like this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.13 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/0.X.Y.Z Safari/525.13.

Then change to something like this or any other user agent string:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543 Safari/419.3

The result is shown below where the browser will act like an iPhone Browser.

This might actually be useful for testing applications for the iPhone browser. Of course, you can do it in Firefox too but Google Chrome browser is probably closer to the iPhone’s Safari browser since it’s based on the WebKit.

Here’s how you can create your own Google Chrome Themes using the Chromium Theme Creator:

With this tool, to build the themes\default.dll file is far from a click.
A rewrite from scratch has been done, because I’ve lost (or almost) my previous source code, now I’m working on another computer. Since my notebook has its LCD display’s backlight damaged I couldn’t reach the previous source code. However this new one is written for Lazarus compiler.

First and foremost -> Requirements:

These files must be in the same directory where this tool is installed.

I believe you will need to download the open-source Chromium version first. (Not the regular Chrome browser for development)

Here’s how to use the Chromium Theme Creator:

How to use:
- When creating a new theme project, the PNG image files will be extracted into separate directories, you just need to edit them, and build with this tool.
Note that every project is kept in different directories.

New features:
- Authorship details inside the same theme file, now.
- Preview themes: This tool will show some images from the Theme file itself by dragging theme files and dropping over it in order to preview it and if you want you can replace default.dll in Chrome’s path and after that Launch it by clicking Apply button.
